The Price range will be around 100K usd. I will be sailing El Caribe (and surrounding areas). I will be living aboard full time.

This is a new idea for me. I was strongly leaning toward a catamaran, (Gemini), now I'm wavering. I've done a lot of searching for info, but wanted to check in here. There are so many things I haven't been able to discover. How do they do at anchor? Good tri sailing blogs out there? On average are they more expensive than cats or less in the 35ish foot models? They seem very exposed to the sun...

Really, any ideas or comments appreciated. I like their speed. I like their looks. I need your thoughts and/or your expertise.

So I got around to attempting to install an anti siphon for our engine. The setup that I got is just basically a T fitting that sits between the heat exchanger and the injection elbow. I ran a line from the T up to the very top of the engine room and then connected it to a fitting that is right above one of the cockpit drains.

When I run the engine a lot of water shoots out the fitting. More than I thought it would be. I was wondering if this is okay? How much water is supposed to shoot out of the anti siphon?

I'm considering moving the point that the T fitting vents out of from the cockpit drain fitting to over the side. I have an unused through hull way up high near where the normal exhaust is. Anyone have input on this setup?

Hi!

After three mad years of raising money, networking and holding crappy jobs, I'm finally leaving Seattle in July to begin my 2 (or more) year single hand circumnavigation of the globe!

It's wild to think of how far I've come since 2009. I was 29, I'd just moved back to Seattle and I had nothing in my pockets but a list of goals to accomplish over the next three years. The last one on the list: "sail alone around the world and write a novel."

So that's what I'm doing!

Anyhow, I know I haven't posted much on here the last year. I've been pretty busy. Not cool, I know. Gotta keep my cruiserforum network strong.

Anyhow, if anybody will be between Seattle and Australia after July, let's meet up and have a drink!

Here's my blog: Broad Reach » sailing the planet for humanity

and here's my kickstarter page (for the novel): Sailing Alone Around the World and Writing About It by Alexander Clark — Kickstarter

Hello,

I have a Top Hat 25 a 25 foot sloop which has standard winches.

Self tailing winches are very expensive and I have seen these from Barton Marine in the UK for sale on the internet. I have spoken to people who have also wondered about them but noonhe who has actually used them.

http://www.bartonmarine.com/products-winches-and-winchers.asp
The ones I want to know about are the "Winchers"

Rubber thingies that fit on the top of the normal winch and for a fraction of the cost magically you have a self tailing winch.

Has anyone used them?
How good are they?
Do they make it as easy as they should for short handed or solo sailing?

p.s. I am always on the lookout for things that can make it easier for me to sail solo.

I'm in the process of installing my new Simrad autopilot and am trying to choose a good spot for the compass. The instructions say "not near motors, electrical cable, chunks of metal etc" but low and near the pivot point. My problem of course is finding such a place. My boat has an iron keel to complicate the issue. It seems that there are two reasonable choices: low on the centerline in the bilge but only a few inches above the iron keel or in the back of the chart table. The chart table is near the centerline and only about 30" above the waterline. It is fairly far from the engine and keel but may be subject to interference from a laptop or ipods. The bilge location would seem ideal except for the chunk of iron. I could also locate it about halfway between the keel and motor down low but then it is within a foot of 00 battery cables.
Any thoughts of best choice or should I just try one and see how it works and be prepared to move it?
This is turning into a bit of a project so I'm open to enlightenment to save a step or two.
Thanks,
Shoal
